Excel Form Password Solution

Ok so I recently got asked by a friend to help him access an Excel worksheet of his that he had password protected but couldn’t remember the password for. After a quick google I found a site which allowed me to download a visual basic plugin for excel which claimed to do what I needed it to. However, for some reason my version of excel didn’t like the plugin.

So after a bit more searching I found this solution posted for if you have forgotten your password. It basically runs a macro by the looks of it and gives an alternative password that you can use to unlock the sheet. As far as I am aware it only works on a file that you can open, but just can’t edit. There are some files that you need a password to open at all and i’m not sure how to bypass this.

Anyway here is the info from the site:

Crack Sheet Protection Password

This routine provides a password to unprotect your worksheet. However, it may not give you the original password that was used.

Open the workbook that has the protected sheet in it. Hit Alt+F11 to view the Visual Basic Editor. Hit Insert-Module and paste this code into the right-hand code window:

Sub PasswordBreaker()

Vista Remote Desktop Client

,,,,,,

I recently purchased the September issues of Mac Format. It had a great little article about how to control a PC from your mac using the free software from microsoft called remote desktop connection client. Well I read through it and thought that it would be quite handy as I use my macs for all my image work but unfortunately have to have one of the dark side machines in my office as the world hasn’t ful)ly seen the white light of Apple yet. Of course I didn’t bother checking the minimum system requirements as this was a side note. So after I merrily went along and downloaded the free software (which you can get from Microsoft Download )

Trouble is, my hp laptop is running Vista Home Premium, which apparently doesn’t come with the remote desktop client option - you have to pay another £100 to upgrade. Never one to accept defeat, I found a few sites that if you want to enable it to work on your home premuim version of vista may come in quite handy. Unfortunately as this took my some time I can’t recall all the sites I visited. The first one is here

The main issue I had (which will make sense once you download the files and read the info) is stopping the terminal services. I finally found the best way to do this is to open up a command prompt by right-clicking and running as an adminstrator. Once you have done this type {net stop "Terminal Services"} but without the { }. You need to do this before replacing the .dll file that you get from one of these website (and there are a few out there - try googling "termsrv.zip"

The other issue was that my laptop is running the vista service pack 1 and apparently the initial modified .dll’s didn’t work on this service pack. So I spent ages trying to make the wrong file work! After a bit more searching online I found a site that still had the zip with the new files in and it seemed to work.

I have uploaded some of the files I still had in my downloads folder below but I offer warranty with them as I didn’t make them and you need to have the full instructions really! So feel free to download them and then search the web for the instructions on how to edit the registry and swap the dll file. Then enjoy using vista on your mac..

JD’s Piano Song (Scrubs)

Ok so on our last blog this proved quite popular - for those of you who watch the tv show Scrubs regularly, you will probably be well aware of the little tune the main character JD plays to himself in his head. As he doesn’t exactly name it we will refer to it here as the “Piano Song”…

So when I heard it I quite liked it and, as I normally do, thought i’d do a bit of googling to try and find it. Well the only place I could find that had it was actually a youtube video with a guy playing it out on a piano. So a bit of downloading and then editing later, and here you have the mp3 ready for you to download to save you the hassle :-)
